Notes:
Jealousy is a representation through music of an emotion that both fascinates and baffles me. This piece was written with the intention of exploring new, experimental territory, so I decided to incorporate a physical object. And what better item to represent jealousy than a teakettle, slowly heating up, yet showing no external signs until finally the water boils and a shrill whistle results.
I tried to imitate the boiling process through the form of the piece. The first sound is that of dripping water, followed by an imitation in the piano. An agitated, anxious tension builds until the jealousy starts to seep out. Slowly, things turn to chaos, climaxing in the whistling of the teakettle and an explosion of noise from the ensemble.
