Innocence and Corruption (2007)

Duration: 5'30"

Instrumentation: String quartet

Notes:

Innocence and Corruption is a musical exploration of the juxtaposition of these two subjects in a string quartet setting. The piece begins in a pure, magical atmosphere with the first violin playing an innocent melody. Gradually the surroundings become tainted with corruption, leading to an eruption from the entire quartet. Twice more this shift from innocence to corruption occurs, after which the central section of the piece begins. This section is a macrocosmic reinterpretation of the first, quick journey from innocence to corruption that began the piece. Innocence is explored in much greater depth and the shift to corruption happens at an almost imperceptible pace. When corruption is reached in its entirety, the experience is much more intense than the short glimpses into corruption from the beginning of the piece. Slowly the corruption fades and the piece ends with a rejuvenated, more pure version of the piece's opening.
