Instrumentation: Oboe and Bassoon
Notes:
The Four Conversations for Oboe and Bassoon were composed for my two housemates, Ryan Walsh and Tom Fleming, at the Bowdoin International Music Festival in the summer of 2009. The piece unfolds much as a conversation between two strangers could. The conversation begins with light discussion and a revealing of personalities. As the conversational partners hit upon a mutual area of interest, a more meaningful discussion ensues. But as conflicting, deeply-rooted beliefs are brought to the surface, misunderstandings begin to occur. Finally, the conversation delves into weighty philosophical and conceptual realms, prompting passionate disagreement, but ultimately yielding two more balanced and intelligent beings. This piece is a musing on the complexity of human communication and interaction.
